D.O. RIBERA DEL DUERO

LOGO RIBERA

SINCE 1982 RIBERA DEL DUERO IS A DEMARCATED AREA ALONG THE RIVER EL DUERO, WHERE ONLY RED WINE IS PRODUCED. ON A SOIL CONTAINING LIMESTONE, CLAY AND CACLIUM AROUND 120 SQUARE KILOMTERS ARE PLANTED WITH VINES. THE MAIN TYPES OF THE WINE ARE ‘TINTO FINO’ or ‘TINTO DEL PAÍS’ BOTH MADE OF THE LOCAL SPANISH TOP GRAPE VARIETY TEMPRANILLO. THE WEATHER OF THE PLATEAU RENDERS A VERY FULL GRAPE WITH PRONOUNCED TANNINS.

OTHER PERMITTED GRAPE VARIETIES IN THE AREA ARE THE CABERNET SAUVIGNON, MERLOT, MALBEC, GARNACHA AND THE WHITE ALBILLO.

TO INCREASE ACIDITY, THE LAST GRAPE IS SOMETIMES ADDED IN VERY LOW QUANTITIES.

A POOR SOIL AND HARSH CLIMATE, SOMEWHAT TEMPERED BY THE RIVER, RESULT IN FINE GRAPES, BUT A LOW YIELD. THE WINES ARE VERY FRUITY, DEEP, AND ALMOST BLACK WITH A SOLID BODY.

THEY ARE PERFECT FOR AGEING IN HOGSHEAD CASKS.

BESIDES THAT, MANY ESTATES MARKET YOUNG WINE AND SEMI-CRIANZAS (AN UNOFFICIAL TERM FOR WINES WHICH DO NOT AGE THE FULL PERIOD THAT A CRIANZA AT A MINIMUM NEEDS TO AGE IN WOODEN BARRELS).

THIS IS POSSIBLE SINCE THE ABUNDANT FRUIT AND SWEET TANNINS EXHIBIT THEMSELVES EVEN IN A YOUNG WINE. FOR CRIANZA AND RESERVAS ARE 12 MONTHS IN WOODEN BARRELS AND 1 AND 2 YEARS REQUIRED ON THE BOTTLE RESPECTIVELY.

GRAN RESERVAS REQUIRE AT LEAST 5 YEARS TO AGE OF WHICH TWO YEARS IN WOODEN BARRELS. DE VEGA AND SICILY PESQUERA ARE NO LONGER THE ONLY SPECIAL WINES IN RIBERA DEL DUERO. OF COURSE THE RIBERA REGION ALSO HAS A SHADOW SIDE:

SOMETIMES, THE HARSH CLIMATE BRINGS LATE FROST AND HAIL, SO NOW AND THEN AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE HARVEST IS LOST.

THIS MEANS THAT THE WINE REGION RIBERA DEL DUERO SUFFERS CONTINUOUSLY FROM SCARCITY AND THAT PRICES ARE AT A HIGH LEVEL AS A RESULT.
